General Conduct:

Student athletes have a responsibility to serve as positive role models and representatives of Jefferson Academy, on and off the course. In order to be successful in that role the student athletes should:

  1. Show respect for authority, property and peers at all times

  2. Maintain academic eligibility throughout the season

  3. Follow all team rules

  4. Practice the ideals of Jefferson Academy’s Core Values – CHAMP (Character. Hard Work. Accountability. Mission. Passion.)

Middle School Cross Country Rules:

  1. You are expected to make every effort to be at practice on time. Athletes should be dressed and ready to go at the stated starting time.

  2. If you know you will miss a practice or meet please inform me ahead of time.

  3. Athletes are required to attend a minimum of two practices a week or they run the risk of missing out on meets (this can be discussed as needed as I understand multiple commitments).

  4. If you are injured, you must report the injury so we can develop a plan for rehab. Once a plan is in place you must follow the plan set in place for recovery and participate in only the activity the injury plan allows (jogging, lifting, stationary bike, swimming, etc).

    1. We do have access to the trainer, Anna, at the school. She is fantastic and will work with your athlete during rehab.

  5. If you are overwhelmed with homework, you must take the time necessary to catch up to where you are comfortable again. You are students first and athletes second.

  6.  Jefferson Academy follows CHSAA rules for eligibility. If a student has a failing grade they are ineligible for any competition for the following entire week.

  • This means (Monday 8am to the next Monday at 8am)

  • If a student turns in work to bring up grade eligibility will not be changed for that week.

  • The athlete needs to correct any errors. Grading mistakes happen, check the grades on a regular basis.

  • Teachers report grades Thursday morning and a complete list of D and F grades are given to the coaches and teachers, failing grades are also sent home via email and telephone.

  • Athletes can still continue to practice to stay in shape ready for competition when grades are improved.
    7.
Disruptive and disrespectful behavior will NOT be tolerated at any time. Any athlete that becomes a negative influence on the team through their behavior will be dealt with in the following manner:

  • Verbal warnings will be given to athletes asking for improvements in their behavior.

  • If behavior is repeated, conferences will be held with the athlete, coaching staff, parents, and others as needed to evaluate the problem and brainstorm possible solutions.

  • Each incident will be handled on an individual basis.
8.Good sportsmanship is an essential quality that all athletes need to possess and practice at all times. Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated and will be addressed by the coaching staff. Guidelines for good sportsmanship include:

  1. No cursing, on or off the field (punishable by additional conditioning)

  2. Respect for your teammates, coaches, teachers/faculty and any volunteer staff

  3. Respect for your opponents. Shake hands after events and always show appreciation for others

  4. Never argue with the officials, other coaches, or competitors. One-on-one meetings and discussion regarding team issues are welcome, but there will be no arguing with coaches in public.
    9. All equipment/uniforms issued by the school will be treated with respect and be taken care of by the athlete.
10.Athletes are required to bring all the proper equipment and are responsible for keeping track of their own equipment and belongings (I do offer my car as a place to keep personal belongings safe during practice).

Dress Code:

As students are/will be representing Jefferson Academy both during practices as well as meets they will be expected to maintain and exhibit a well groomed appearance at all times.

The following items are required at all times: correctly fitted running shoes, shorts (running shorts are ideal, but I want the kids to be comfortable so any lightweight shorts are acceptable), t-shirts/tank tops (logos and slogans must be appropriate), socks (additional socks are a good idea in case of rain/wet conditions), warm up top and bottoms (athletic pants and hoodie will be sufficient, logos and slogans must be appropriate), water bottle, [OPTIONAL but HIGHLY recommended] a sports watch (does not have to be anything fancy, GPS is not needed, just something they can keep their time on).

The following items are required for competition: school issued uniform singlet, black shorts (again, running shorts are ideal but any lightweight shorts would work – no basketball shorts), water bottle, [OPTIONAL] racing flats.

Jefferson Academy Athletic Code of Conduct

In addition to the above team rules, all athletes and parents are required to follow and obey all school athletic and student activities code of conduct. Please be sure to read the parent/student handbook as well. Please let me know if you have any questions.
